Robert Boyle
Robert Boyle

(1627-91)

One of the early scientists interested in gases, Boyle published a theory about gases and pressure known as Boyle's Law. Boyle took information available to him that reported the results of earlier experiments, and set up his own experiment to measure the relationships of pressurizing gas to its volume. He found in his experiments that if he compressed a gas in volume, its pressure increased in proportion. For example, compressing a gas to one-third its original volume increased its pressure by three - the pressure tripled.

Boyle experimented with gas volume and pressure.
