Robert Brown
Robert Brown

(1773-1858)

Robert Brown was a British botanist who noticed that molecules in some liquids and gases he was studying had a special motion or movement. Brown published his theory in 1827 that these molecules moved at random and it became known as the Brownian Motion. Sounds pretty elementary, but remember this was in the days before computers and electron microscopes.
