Georg Ernst Stahl
Georg Ernst Stahl

(1660-1734)

Georg Ernst Stahl was a German chemist who had the theory that the reason certain materials or gases burned was because they contained phlogiston. The word, "phlogiston," Stahl got from the Greek language; when translated it meant "flammable." Later scientists proved the phlogiston theory incorrect but did use it as a springboard for further explorations into the mystery of combustion.
