Thomas Graham was a chemist in England who performed important experiments relating to the rates that matter diffused in gases. He got right to the "root of the matter," the square root, that is. Graham proposed that the rate that matter diffused in a container of gas was inversely proportional to the square root of the gas's density. This hypothesis became known as Graham's Law.
