Georg Ernst Stahl
Georg Ernst Stahl

(1660-1734)

Georg Ernst Stahl was a German chemist who had the theory that the reason certain materials or gases burned was because they contained phlogiston. The word, "phlogiston," Stahl got from the Greek language when translated it meant "flammable." Later scientists proved the phlogiston theory incorrect but did use it as a springboard for further explorations into the mystery of combustion.
